The 2021 Region III Men's Soccer Championship gets underway this weekend with a pair of opening round matchups. The winners will advance to the NJCAA District Championship Semi-final matches scheduled for Wednesday, October 27th. The four semi-final victors will advance to the NJCAA North A and North B District Championship matches on Sunday, October 31st. Opening round, and semi-final matches will be hosted by the higher seeded teams with both District Championship contests being hosted by Genesee Community College.
Genesee Community College has earned the top overall seed in the Championship Tournament and will be the team to beat in the North A District bracket. The Cougars finish the season with a 11-0-2 overall record, 10-0-1 against Region 3 opponents. Herkimer College earned the second overall seed and is the top seeded team in the North B District bracket. The Generals finished the season 8-1, with their lone defeat coming at the hands of top seeded Genesee.
One of the two opening round matches scheduled for this weekend will see #8 Fulton-Montgomery CC host #9 Hudson Valley CC. The two teams faced off in early September with FMCC earning a 4-0 victory over the Vikings using a balanced offensive attack which saw four players scoring goals. In the second match-up, #10 Tompkins Cortland CC will visit #7 Niagara County CC. These two teams also met in early September when Niagara posted a 3-0 victory. Both opening round matches are scheduled for 1:00pm on Sunday. The opening round winners will advance to face the two top seeds in the semi-finals. Genesee will face the winner of the matchup between the eighth and ninth seeds; Herkimer will take on the winner of Niagara and Tompkins Cortland.
Fourth seeded Onondaga CC and fifth seeded Finger Lakes CC complete the North A District Bracket of the tournament in a match-up of Mid-State Conference opponents. Onondaga visited the fifth seeded Lakers during the regular season and earned a 4-2 victory behind a hat trick from Martim Silva. The final District semi-final will see #6 Jamestown Community College visiting #3 Mohawk Valley Community College. The Hawks earned the #3 seed on the heels of a 9-2-1 regular season record including a 6-1 early season over the Jayhawks (9-6), highlighted by three goals from Elhadji Sidibe.
