Top Seeds Advance in Division 3 Basketball Regional Tournaments

The top four seeds have advanced to the Region III Semifinals in both Division III Tournaments.  Each tournament continues this weekend with semifinal matchups scheduled for Saturday and the championships scheduled for Sunday.

Onondaga Community College earned the right to host the Men's Final Four with a 97-95 win over Hudson Valley Community College on Tuesday night.  The Lazers were able to build a five point lead over the visiting Vikings heading into the break.  The Vikings would fight back and take a brief lead with about fourteen minutes reamaing in the contest.  OCC would soon take back the lead and hold on for the victory. 

Onondaga will play host to the Corning Community College in the second tournament semifinal on Saturday at 5:00pm.  Corning advanced with a 60-57 win over Finger Lakes CC.  The Red Barons built a ten point lead after the first twenty minutes of play in the teams' fourth matchup this season.  The Lakers would close the gap in the second half as Corning held on for the three point victory.

The first semifinal in the men's tournament will feature long time rivals Herkimer College and Mohawk Valley Community College.  The Generals and Hawks advanced to the weekend after posting big wins over conference foes North Country CC and Fulton-Montgomery CC.  Herkimer built 19 point lead by halftime over NCCC leading to a 93-65 win.  Mohawk Valley also built a sizable halftime lead as they headed to the break with a 47-29 advantage.  The Hawks would finsih a strong second half with a 95-56 victory over the Raiders.

In the women's tournament the top seed Hawks from MVCC opened up a seven point halftime lead over North Country CC in part thanks to a second half 15-2 run. The Hawks move on to the semifinals with a 61-36 victory.  With the win Mohawk Valley will now host the regionals semifinals and finals this weekend.  The Hawks are seeking their third consecutive Region III crown and fourth in the past five seasons.  The top seed will take on the fourth seeded Red Barons from Corning CC Saturday afternoon at 1:00.

Corning advances to the semifinal win a opening round 60-47 win over fifth seeded Fulton-Montgomery CC.  The Red Barons opened up a five point advantage after the first quarter 17-12.  The Raiders would close the gap to four by halftime as Corning headed to the locker room with a 30-26 advantage.  CCC would increase their lead to seven after three quarters of play and extend the lead to double digits in the final minutes for the victory.

The second semifinal features a pair of Mid-State Conference teams who will meet for the fourth time this season.  The second seed Lazers from Onondaga will take on the third seeded Lakers from Finger Lakes at 3:00 on Saturday.  OCC is 3-0 against FLCC this season, including a win in the MSAC Tournament final last Sunday.  The teams have played three close games this season each decided in the fourth quarter.

Onondaga advanced to the regional final with a 63-45 win over Jefferson CC.  The Lazers up things up in the second quarter outscoring the Cannoneers 23-10 opening up a sixteen point halftime lead.  Finger Lakes was able to overcome a slow start to earn a hard fought 50-40 win over SUNY Adirondack.  The Timberwolves opened up a 14-2 lead after quarter number and took a four point lead into the locker room at the half.  Adirondack would hold on to a three point lead after three quarters of play but were outscored 19-6 in the final frame as the Lakers pulled away for the quarterfinal victory.
